Poppy Dinsey speaking at Queens last night (image from Queens University Belfast Alumni Office Facebook page)
Last night I revisited my university days and attended a talk at Queens University. But far from the kind of talk I was used to (where I panicked outside a seminar room, before taking a seat at the back praying that no one would ask me a question that I wouldn’t know the answer to…) this was a fun, light hearted, fresh talk with someone of my own age who has done phenomenally well for herself.
The lady speaking at the ‘Creating Your Dream Job’ event was Poppy Dinsey, the brains behind What I Wore Today
Poppy started blogging over 10 years ago, but it was her daily outfit blog ‘What I Wore Today’ that brought her press attention from around the world. Hundreds of thousands of people were looking at her blog each month to see her outfits and in September 2011 she re-launch WIWT as a social network and iPhone app so that anyone could upload their outfits and share their personal style with the world.
Having spent the past few weeks wondering what it is that I am doing/should be doing/will be doing with my life I was very much looking forward to hearing what someone like Poppy had to say about creating a dream job.
I scribbled notes throughout the evening, and here are some of the highlights, which i thought I would share just in case any of the rest of you are feeling as ‘meh’ as I had been!
Sacrifice is a means to an end
Be nice
Be prepared to change
Immerse in learning
A dream job is only a dream job if it is rewarding
If you don’t like your life, you can change it
If a shortcut was easy, it would just be the way
This kind of positive message was just what I needed to hear, and I look forward to putting her words into practise!
And for those of you who were wondering, Poppy was wearing a Nor Lisa dress and Pluck & Devour necklace…
